Teen anxiety is often the signal that puberty has begun. Has your adorable little daughter or roguish young boy grown-up some and stopped listening to you? Are they becoming defiant? Instead, by understanding what they are going through and spending more time with them, discussing their interests (music they’re listening to, how their friends are doing, sports with boys, fashion with girls, and if appropriate, sharing some of your own childhood experiences when you were their age) will often produce miraculous results.

But… if you find your interest shunned and your child’s behaviour becoming more extreme, even over the top and disturbing to the point where you’re concerned they might do something reckless, something they may regret, then it’s time to take a closer look and see if their behaviour matches any of the troubling anxiety symptoms children display when they have an anxiety disorder.

One of the best exercises you can do together is called a standing push up. This will give you the chance to touch each other and use the others weight as a way to increase your strength.

In each hand, hold a single resistance band. There will be one end of the band in your hand, the other in your partners. Now place your backs together and begin to tighten the strain on the bands. When it is significant, raise your arms to the same level as your chest. Inhale deeply. Then as you exhale, push your arms forward in the same way you would do a chest press. Then hold out for five seconds, and bring your arms back to your body. Do this in sets of ten for a total of three sets.

Another workout is pushing your backs against each other and getting into a squat position. With a medicine ball in hand begin exchanging the ball back and forth at shoulder level. Have your partner hold the ball with both hands then turning towards you, meets them with your own set of hands. Then switch the ball again on the opposite side. Do not leave the squat position while doing this exercise. Repeat until fatigue.

With your backs against each other, and the same medicine ball, it is time to do another exercise set. Stand up tall, and both of you raise your hands. One of you will pass the medicine ball to the other person in the standing position, then you will both bend down to touch your toes, and exchange the ball between your feet. Keep doing this until fatigue.

Grab a set of cardio bikes. Sitting next to each other, challenge the other one to see who can go the greater distance on a bike. Make the competition fun and have the winner give the other a nice foot massage. Remember, there is no real loser here when both of you are getting into shape.

Estrogens (female hormones) and androgens (male hormones) are the two primary classifications of hormones found in both males and females in differing amounts. Puberty is the physical and sexual maturation involving growth spurts and the appearance of secondary sexual characteristics such as hair and genital development. The onset of puberty generally occurs in boys between the ages of 10-13. If a teen’s breasts are noticeable and the teen is not heavy, suspect that a hormone imbalance is present.

Gynecomastia, Male Breast or Man Boobs

There is hormone imbalance when the body produces more of the female hormone estrogen and less of the male hormone testosterone. However, obese male children may have large breasts due to excess fat and is not a hormone imbalance. Once a child loses weight, the large breasts often disappear.

Gynecomastia presents in mid-to-late puberty; young male teens can develop gynecomastia because of too much estrogen and too little testosterone. Gynecomastia causes enlargements of male breasts known colloquially as man-boobs. It may be present in one breast or both and is located under the nipples.

Gynecomastia generally is short lived, lasting three to six months in most cases. A few teen boys may have the condition longer. Sometimes the breasts can be painful or tender, especially when boys put on clothes that rub against the breasts. When the breasts are tender or painful, the doctor can prescribe medication.

Hormone Imbalance Can Be the Result of A Delayed Puberty

If there is no increase in testicular volume or size by the age of 14, suspect a hormone imbalance and can be the result of a delayed puberty. One cause of this condition, called constitutional delay, often runs in families and if this is the case, normal puberty will return. Constitutional delay affects growth, the onset of pubic and facial hair and is more common in boys than in girls.

Another cause of delayed puberty is hypogonadism or low testosterone levels. Symptoms are impaired growth of genitals, impaired hair growth and the arms and legs grow disproportionately to the rest of the body. Hypogonadism can be the result of certain types of medications, pituitary conditions, obesity, or infectious diseases.

See a physician if the symptoms appear because conditions such as diabetes and cystic fibrosis can cause a delayed puberty, as will thyroid, pituitary conditions, and abnormal testes.…
