What to Expect from Your First Acupuncture Treatment

Are you looking forward to having your first acupuncture treatment but are not sure what to expect? It’s understandable to have some worries, especially since you’ve never done it yet, but the first thing you should know is that there is nothing to worry about.

What is Acupuncture

The common knowledge about acupuncture is that it makes use of needles injected into specific pressure points in the body to relieve a variety of symptoms, ranging from chronic pain to stress and anxiety, to digestive issues, and more.

This 2,500-year-old method is known to activate the body’s qi (pronounced as chi) or energy. Otherwise known as the lifeforce energy contained in the body, this qi is responsible for helping facilitate the activity and flow of energy in the parts within the body.

It is believed that blockages in this lifeforce are what bring about the imbalance in the body, and thus the diseases. Acupuncture, therefore, helps improve one’s wellness by relieving these blockages, allowing the qi to flow much better.

For your first acupuncture, here are some things to keep in mind for an optimal experience.

Consultation

As with any treatment, the first thing you should do is sit down for a thorough consult. It is from this that your acupuncturist can have a clear idea of what your issues are, and how they can best address them.

Expect to be asked detailed questions about your current lifestyle, medical history, and symptoms that you may be experiencing. Part of this process is having them check your tongue, as well as the pulse from both your wrists.

Also make sure to let your acupuncturist know if you are currently taking any medication or supplements, as well as your history of it, if possible. This information could all play a role in how your treatment plan is going to look like.

Wear Comfortable Clothing

Wear comfortable clothing when going to your acupuncture Denver-based appointment. The process will most likely have you lying down and, in some instances, may even require you to remove articles of clothing. Don’t worry though, because the facility would usually have clean medical gowns you can wear during the treatment.

Stay Still

Understandably, it’s terrifying to think that you will have not just one but several long needles stuck on you for as much as 25-30 minutes. In the hands of a professional, however, there’s no need to worry about the pain of having these needles on your skin. The needles are sterile and disposable too, so hygiene and safety are assured as well.

A high level of precision is required for this process, which is why it’s important that you only go to a certified practitioner of the treatment.

Some acupuncture points may be more sensitive than others, but again, there is very little to no discomfort at all for you to expect. It is highly recommended that you use the time with the needles to relax and de-stress. In the event that you do feel any pain or discomfort, however, do not hesitate to alert your acupuncturist immediately.

After-Effects

After the treatment, you can expect to feel a bit lightheaded, but this shouldn’t stay for very long. It is also advised that you take it easy after treatment so you don’t over-exert your body.
